Kauaeranga Forest Education Camp
Murray House
The seed for the construction of the Kauaeranga Forest Education Camp was sown on the 17th June 1972, when the principal of Parawai school, Thames. Mr Murray Howse, placed a proposal for such a project before his school committee which, after favourable comment, he wrote to the General Manager of the South Auckland Education Board seeking the support of his department.
History of the Camp
While Government policy dictated that his Department could not become financially involved in such a project; he was able to offer the assistance of the Department's Advisory Services.
On 23rd April 1974 a Pilot committee was formed of interested personnel from Thames, and it was through its exploratory efforts that the stage came on 28th of April 1974 when the Kauaeranga Forest Education Camp (Thames) Inc, was inaugurated to construct, administer and develop an Outdoor Education Camp.
The project soon became one of intense activity for the committee and the involvement by many hundreds of firms, organisations, clubs and personnel from both in and outside of the Thames District.
By the beginning of 1979, the camp was ready to take its first occupants; these being members of the Thames Round Table Organisation, which had given great support during the development stage.
And so on the 19th May 1979, the Kauaeranga Forest Education Camp was officially opened by the Hon. Venn Young, Minister of Forests.
